Week 7: Bucks -3 at Ducks (Saturday 7:30 PM EST)
Another big "amateur" game this week in "Oregon" makes for an easy all-play call for the Exec. Comm.
For Thursday night's action we've got Niners -3.5 @ Seahawks, Coastal Car. +7.5 at James Madison, Middle Tennessee +4.5 at Louisiana Tech, and UTAP +20 at Western Kentucky.

Boom: Welcome to NFL Priiimetime! We have a lot of love to give in this show today. Tom and I worked out our differences and decided we were better off together. ♫ Just the two of us, we can make it if we try. ♫
ReplyDeleteTJ: You know it, partner.
Boom: ♫ And bad mistakes, I've made a few. ♫
TJ: Same, no sweat, we'll get past it.
Boom: ♫ Ebony and Ivory. ♫
TJ: Please stop.

DeleteBoom: Tom, we need a pick of the week that combines your football aptitude with my sense of drama.
DeleteTJ: Well, there's no bigger mismatch than the Broncos defense against the Chargers offense. One completely smothers the pass, and the other doesn't even want to pass.
Boom: I don't think Jim Harbaugh has a hatred for the Broncos like he does the Chiefs, at least not yet. Are you worried about the Chargers coming off a bye week?
TJ: I think the extra preparation and the knowledge of a divisional opponent has the effect of keeping scoring down. Jimbo wants to bring it back to old fashioned football.
Boom: As Socrates said, to own the libs, you must first own thyself. As for Sean Payton, maybe he can't surprise inside kick yet, but I bet he has some other trick that will get under Harbaugh's skin. Plenty of potential for gamesmanship from both coaches. I like it.

I was tempted to use my DeShone Kizer-Hue Jackson formula and pick against the woeful Browns again. (TANK FOR TET. QUIT FOR QUIN) But 9.5 points is a lot, especially given the Eagles' struggles. So, I'll go with the Steelers traveling West to take on a Raiders team that is a weekend away from a total rebuild. The Steelers are coming off two tough losses, and although Tomlin can struggle against the AFC West, I see this as a bounce-back game for the AFC North's leader.

all due respect to college football, but MNF is the game of the week. there's less drama on RHONY. will aaron rogers inspire his team to victory? is there division in the locker room? any players hold solidarity to saleh? too bad woody johnson can't go on WWHL to explain what r e a l l y happened. controversy aside, this game dictates the direction of the afc east. if the patriots have finally hit rock bottom (all pats fans want is for drake maye's debut to be better than the saint's spencer rattler) and the magic of wunderkind coach mcdaniel has faded in miami this game establishes the afc leader. and it's a harmonic convergence that it is scheduled the week that both the yankees and mets reach their respective league champion series. give me josh allen and the bills -2.5

DeleteI am a bit bereft after watching Aidan Hutchinson going down in a fashion similar to Nick Chubb last year—maybe it is a football sin to root for two teams but the Browns and Lions are mine and I have certainly swallowed more than my share of shit as a result. This sport is a tough one to be a fan of sometimes.
As for the pick, Cincinnati is better than the record suggests - much better I think - and the Giants are worse than their record suggests, if anything. Comparing the QB stat lines between Burrow and Jones so far is almost laughable. The Bengals need to start stacking wins to have a shot at the playoffs and they have the players to do it. Cincy has some poor defensive stats but the Giants are one dimensional and lack weapons other than Malik Nabers—and the Bengals will probably remember to cover him unlike their I-71 counterparts. Bengals with a solid W and a road cover tonight.
Nabers isn’t even active—he’ll be easy to defend!

We're back with the Lions for the revenge matchup against the Cowboys and everyone is reporting eligible. Cowboys righted the ship with back to back road wins, but after a late-night win in Pittsburgh they're toast against the rested Lions off the bye. The last time Cowboys played at home, the Ravens ran for 274 yards on 45 carries, and Gibbs and Monty are salivating. Lions offense continues to roll and locks up a comfortable win.
1. AP: OSU
ReplyDelete2. Texas -14
Im going with Texas as my essay. I know 14 pts is a huge spread in a rivalry game but man are the odds stacked against Oklahoma. Texas gets Ewers back at home and they are prepared to score. Texas is averaging over 40 pts/game and Oklahoma is missing their top 5, yes FIVE, wide receivers. Recipe for disaster. Another crazy thing is that Oklahoma does not have one player on offense that played in this game last year. I've watched many OSU/Mich matchups and having experience in the madness of these rivalry games is priceless. Blow out coming.

Kent state has established themselves as the worst college football team this year but today they have a slight chance to cover for the first time. TV viewership is going to be at an all time high for what should have been the game of the week if not the all play as 0-5 Kent takes on a 1-4 Ball st. Getting 6.5+ here seems generous but the votes and money still on Ball St. I’ll take the chance on Kent giving me a win this time even if they take another loss.

i'd love to go in on the colts this week but regarding this week's starting qb, all we know for sure is that joe flacco could throw for 600 yds and 8 tds and the nyt headline on thursday would be identical to this week's "There is no Colts QB controversy: Joe Flacco is good, but Anthony..." because winning at football is less important than other things for many dominators of today's zeitgiest.
so let's turn our eyes to foxboro where rookie drake maye gets his first nfl action. houston has a TON of injuries but tunsil and stroud arent among them. you know who stroud can and will turn to in times when nico collins isnt there? tank dell. kyle dugger banged up, along with notable ex-browns takitaki and peppers, should allow stroud to find dell and schultz with diggs filling the all-important stefanski offense role of decoy.

DeleteEssay: Titans - While the Titans may not be great and Mason Rudolph isn't appealing for most, they are really only a few plays away from being 2-2 or even 3-1. The offense has shown some potential and should continue to improve. While this is partially a play on the Titans, it is more a play against the Colts. Defense riddled with injuries. Just shredded by the Jaguars, record better than it should be at 2-3. Throw in the bye for extra preparation and our essay is on the Titans.

I’m liking what I see from the Commanders sans Snyder. It’s as if there’s reason to hope and maybe, someday they won’t have the worst stadium in the NFL (impossible to get to any other way than by driving in and paying a parking fee, how convenient). At least other monstrosities in the middle of nowhere will reward the intrepid hiker by not requiring a parking fee if you manage to walk in. Jayden Daniels is shaping up to be a franchise QB and they are putting up serious points, similar to the Ravens. If the Commanders and Ravens were in the same division or conference this would shape up to be a high scoring rivalry, alas, we’re stuck with the vestiges of two separate leagues because billionaires think it will make them more money to keep it that way. I see this game as a Fouts Chargers vs Marino Dolphins high scoring affair, back and forth until the last minutes. Which means, let’s triple cheddar the Commanders with their 7 point handicap.

The Buckeyes have the most talent in the country and I expect them to roll to a national title. They're undervalued in this spot because they haven't played anyone yet, but no one will be sleeping on them after tonight. (Why is Texas ranked ahead of OSU? Because they dismantled a mediocre UM team? OSU will do the same thing next month. I digress ...) Jeremiah Smith may be the best receiver I've ever seen, and I've seen him play five games. The best two running backs in the country (okay, fine, east of Boise) wear scarlet and gray. Ryan Day is actually calling designed runs for Will Howard, something he refused to do for Justin Fields and CJ Stroud. Oh, and the defense is loaded too. Dillon Gabriel won't put up much of a fight tonight; Ryan Day is dialed TF in; Bucks will handle the Ducks.

I get Justin Herbert coming off a bye against bo nix. Just seems like a no brainer. I enjoy the Boom and TJ series as much as anyone and I'm and with TJ on this one though I appreciate Boom's perspective on the head ball coaches. Harbaugh going to the AFC West really will be a gift for us football fans for the next 5 years. Very soon, just maybe there will be a future in which Shovel Pass Mahomes won't be able to skip his way into the playoffs every year without question, and we can all be grateful about that.

- this is purely based on the fact that I think Jayden Daniels is having a very significant impact that books can’t truly measure yet. This game will be a measuring stick for him. Yeah- it’s their toughest opponent- but Jayden is completing 77% of his passes- and I think it keeps going today- one possession game most of the game- they get a potential backdoor cover
Vote of the week: Oregon +3 over OSU. This line looks suspiciously small given the unprecedented hype over Jeremiah Smith and the rest of this Buckeyes team that's gone full Yankees/Dodgers/Mets 300M+ salary mode over the rest of "college" football. Winning football still requires more than spending money plus it seems the playoff needs Oregon to win here more than OSU and I don't think the Buckeyes will be emptying the playbook here given the chance these teams play not just once but two more times this season (woof). Ducks cover and maybe win in front of their home crowd.

Essay Steelers -3 over Raiders - the Steelers have been a (slightly) above average team over the first five weeks and the Raiders are circling the drain, down at #29 in the company of the Dolphins and (sorry everyone) the Browns, and have just switched QBs. This is totally unlike the usual scenario where I pick against a guy making his first start and then he comes out and blows the doors off for one game before disappearing into the night forever, we have seen Aidan O'Connell as recently as last week, and based on that I am going to lay the three here.

Classic first game after firing the coach bump. Not only is Saleh out, but Nathaniel Hackett has also been demoted. Bills struggled badly on the road last week, and are missing weapons. Jets win a close one.
AP. Oops... missed it. Would have been an OSU loss anyway. This was entirely because I was ready to do my picks on Friday and there weren't yet lines. And I got busy Saturday and never got here.

I can't imagine what the strip was like this weekend with thousands of toothless morons hitting on 16 against a dealer's 5. But I imagine it was a sight to avoid. That said this will not by any stretch be a Raiders home game. The Browns took over Vegas and the crowd was easily 50-50 if not 60-40 for the visitors. Pittsburgh fans travel, so that stadium will be black and yellow and loud when the home team has the ball. All told, if the visitors were disciplined and back to the team hotel before 6a, it should be enough for them to beat a poor Raiders team that has made the move to a lesser QB.
