Cheddar Bay Playoff W1: Starts January 2nd!

Happy new year everyone! Here are the playoff rules.

  • The top 8 players make it in. I will be scoring this week later on this afternoon so it should be clear after the 4 PM games where the cut-off is. I will update this post with the final roster.
  • I have done my best to score accurately as we go but please take a moment to check your own score and alert us to any discrepancies! After today it will probably be too late to fix any errors.
  • The first week of the playoffs will start with the 1/2 bowl games (Miss St +1.5 vs Illinois, Tulane +1.5 vs USC, LSU -14.5 vs Purdue, Penn State +2.5 vs Utah) and the Monday night game (Bills -1.5 at Bengals). All picks are due by noon tomorrow when the first bowl game kicks off.
  • For this first set, post your five picks in this thread as usual. There will be an option for subsequent games to submit by email to someone who is not themselves in the playoffs (once we know exactly who's in).
  • We will continue next weekend with some number of playoff-relevant NFL games, to be determined by the Executive Committee, and the college championship next Monday.
  • Regular picks for this week score 3 points and your essay is worth 8.
  • The second week of the playoffs is the NFL wild card: six games, 5 points each, 10 point essay: 35 points available.
  • The third week is the divisional round: four games, 5 points each, 10 point essay, 25 points available.
  • The fourth week is the championship round: a 10 point regular pick and a 15 point essay, 25 points available.
  • We conclude, obviously, with the Super Bowl which will be 25 points
Best of luck to all and thanks for a great season.

SUNDAY EVENING UPDATE: It did come down to the 4 PM games but it looks like we now have our playoff field: DK, Jmacdaddio, OXR, Matt Borcas, Frowns, Nick Harlow, Thatsfine, and Gschonberg. Congrats everyone. If anyone spots any errors in the sheet please let me know immediately, otherwise we will begin tomorrow as planned.

  1. Happy 2023 everyone, and good luck to the playoff contenders.
I forgot how playoff cheddar saves time spent agonizing over the schedule to find 5 games to pick.

I’m also assuming there’s one essay to use between the Monday games and the NFL games pending selection (plus the college championship). Since I’m low on brainpower needed for an essay, I’ll hold out for what’s behind door #2.

    Miss St +1.5
    USC -1.5
    Purdue +14.5
    Utah -2.5

    Bengals +1.5

    1. I'm gonna go ahead and put my essay for this round on the Bills. No doubt this game involves two teams and quarterbacks who the league loves to promote and it will be an upset if these two QBs aren't playing games in the Divisional Round. As for how much this game means to either team, relatively speaking, it's hard to say and to me this just seems like one of those sloppy games where neither team wants to show too much or do too much. The Bengals have been really hot lately and have had a lot of luck (and questionable officiating) go in their favor. The Bills being favored looks a bit too convenient. I think the Bills end up coming away with a win that too much shouldn't be read into in any event.

    1. Essay: Bills

The Bills are in the driver's seat for the one seed, but a loss to Cincy would change that. With AFC supremacy on the line, I think they'll show that they're the best team in the conference. They've won six in a row, their offense is humming, and the weather will be perfect tonight for Josh Allen to air it out. The Bengals are good, but Allen > Burrow and McDermott > Taylor, and those advantages will be decisive tonight.
