You all can get off my lawn with these Friday night college games....Anyway, I'm really tempted to lean into the DeShaun Watson Open Festering Wound/Revenge Game, but the Browns are about as reliable as an NFL concussion protocol. So, we'll go back to basics after a crappy Week 12 and take old reliable TCU. TCU is an ATS darling (9-2-1) and are playing to remain unbeaten and secure a spot in the National College Playoff. That's good enough for me.

I don't think Michigan is in any real danger but 16.5 is a pretty big spread for Purdue, who has made it into this game by being plucky and irritating. They are definitely not a team you want to face when you're looking ahead or focused on other things. Michigan has a lot on their plate. Their top DL just got hit with a felony charge yesterday, so that's a distraction even though Harbaugh sees no problem with letting him play without even the slightest. Even more importantly, Blake Corum is out for the season. Obviously they did fine with him last week but there's bound to be a let down, and it makes it easier for Purdue to scheme without having to account for him. And just in general, Michigan has been getting real full of themselves after their 2nd beat down of OSU. All true CFB fans know that's called "rat poison," and you don't want to be playing the Spoilermakers after you get a dose of that. They're in playoff mode, they're dreaming about a semifinal matchup against TCU, the recipe is there for a tougher than expected single digit win.

The Packers seem to have recovered some swagger while the Bears are in free fall after a decent start. There’s nothing indicating the Bears are all of a sudden a better team following last week’s loss to the Jets. The Packers aren’t doing much better, however their recent losses have been relatively close. Plus Aaron Rodgers is in a shorter hook after Jordan Love’s effective play vs. Philly. Time to put 3 cheddars on the Pack.

DeleteWas traveling with the family today and couldn't find the time to get my Browns essay in or any votes on the 1 or 4 o clock games so I'm stuck dumpster diving with these two night games. The Colts could barely do anything against the Steelers last week and the Steelers were not good. Hard to see them staying within three touchdowns of the Cowboys let alone 10.5 but this, folks, is why they play the games. Also, I sort of enjoy all the Jeff Saturday discourse. Will go ahead with the Colts and the points and will also take the Saints +3.5 for my last one.

Essay/Michigan -16.5 vs. Purdue
If I were betting on the first half, I’d take Purdue. For the whole kit and caboodle? I’m putting my money on Downy WrinkleGuard sponsored human manifestation of pleated khakis. They are who I thought they were. Last year, post-OSU win, Michigan routed Iowa 42-3. The Big Blue has been here before. Maybe I waited too long to take my POTY, maybe I waited until the perfect moment. Today will tell. There is some extra tragedy all wrapped up in this with the untimely death of Aiden O’Connell’s older brother. Michigan’s fan base responded to this news by donating en masse to a fund that will make a donation to a charity the O’Connell family will choose. It’s classy and I like it. That’s how to not sew more karma. Covering this spread comes down to Michigan’s pass defense, who have embarrassed good passing QBs all year. Sorry, Tua.
When I have fared better in Cheddar, it’s because I feel confident in specific coordinators. Which brings me to Steve Clinkscale, Michigan’s Co-Defensive Coordinator who joined the wolverines May 2022 as the passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach. Prior to Michigan, he spent five seasons at Kentucky, who lead the SEC in interceptions in 2020 with 16 on the season. The Wolverines have 10 so far this season….so that means 10 more today? I think that’s how that works!
MICHIGAN IS MY POTY BTW

ReplyDeleteAt worst, this is Simien versus Mike White (a game I won't watch)
But if Fields plays, and Rodgers plays, I think the Bears have the advantage.
If the Bears get to the 180+ yard rushing threshold, I like our chances, especially with it at +4.5, as Field fully practiced this week, so I know the number is getting lower.
Oh, and take the over. Even though the Packers struggle to score, the Bears defense has lost like 4 starters in the last 2 weeks. Pointsfest!
Damn, I missed both of the all-plays. That's my bad. I'll take LSU +18.5 over Georgia and UNC +7.5 over Clemson to start the weekend. POTY coming tomorrow.

Essay/POTY: Browns -7 over Texans
I've been waiting all season to POTY this game. Deshaun gets to make his grand return in his former stomping grounds, in front of Cal McNair and Tony Buzbee—and against what is by far the worst team in the NFL, which should mitigate any concerns about his being rusty. With all due respect to Jacoby Brissett, he is not Deshaun Watson. While Jacoby's deep balls to Coop and DPJ hung in the air for what seemed like an eternity, Deshaun's should hit them in stride, leading to a quick-strike offense that Browns fans have never seen. And obviously, this will serve only to open up the running game more for Chubb and Hunt. Browns by at least two scores today.
Also missed some all plays!

Essay Browns -7 over Texans -- Not feeling inspired this week after being extremely wrong about college, but what we have right here is a case of not enough points if Watson is any sort of upgrade whatsoever at QB. How about if not? Well, I think the Browns should reasonably be favored without him anyway, based on a conservative gameplan and a few shots once they completely sell out to stop Chubb/Hunt. Also if this goes calamitously wrong I suspect I'll have some company.
E. Browns -7 @ Houston
ReplyDeleteQuick Essay. Browns season is probably over. Gotta make up 3 games in division because they lost every possible coin-flip situation to this point. But they don't seem to realize it yet and they get their $250M QB/weirdo back this week. It's not impossible, and a couple of wins has a team that needs to finish with 7 straight wins in a situation where the schedule allows that to happen.
Browns keep it simple offensively and has great success. They get an early lead and take away Houston's ability to run down their throat. Browns win a fairly easy one against a "1-2-3 Cancun" team.
And we're done. Zero confidence in anything except Browns. So we might be looking at the score of 1 for this week.

ReplyDeleteDeshaun Watson come back game against Houston. 7 seems fair and all the browns have to do is hand the ball off to Chubb most of the game, lean on the defense who is playing with their hair on fire, and not ask Watson to do to much. plus, I'm in new orleans right now and I get watch the game from the local browns backers chapter which I am very excited for. Hopefully they have fun t-shirt for me to pick up and they have a seafood etoufee for me to order, i had three soft shell crab po boys yesterday so i do not need another sandwich.

Essay - Saints +3.5
ReplyDeleteHard to see the Bucs as a huge threat here, standing at 5-6, coming off a loss to the Browns. At no point have they looked like a team to watch out for. They look old as hell. In week 2 the Saints-Bucs were tied 3-3 in the 4th quarter, one of those games that my grandfather would love. A defensive struggle! With Tristan Wirfs out and the Saints defense a consistent problem for Brady since arrival in the NFC South I like the Saints.
