Going for my first essay win of the season. The Browns are the better team playing the Falcons this week and this line seems like it should be larger. My picks of picking good road teams against bad home teams had been hit and miss this season mainly because of large spreads against the away teams so this 1.5 spread is an essentially picked game and I'm taking the Browns.
Bengals -3.5 for a point tonight

Essay - Vikings -2.5
My one week at the top of the Cheddar standings proved to be a short visit after I managed to salvage just one measly point. So, back to basics I guess with a risky Essay pick of the Vikings to beat a banged up, rapidly aging Saints team in London. So, yes - I'm trying to turn around my season by betting on Kirk Cousins. We all know what Cousins does in primetime, so maybe playing while half the country is still asleep is the answer. Fortune favors the bold - or something like that.

The Clown factory is at it again as Jacoby Brissett is proving to be half the football player as he is a person. My goodness is it impressive to read what people who have played and worked with in the past say about him. What a great idea it was to bring him in for this season. We are lucky to have Andrew Berry as the Browns GM, and gosh does that feel nice to say. Anyway, Jacoby's playing well and should be able to handle whatever Atlanta tosses his way, I don't think anything fazes this guy and it's awesome to watch him run qb sneaks like Tom Brady. Myles getting into a car wreck I think is OK for this team right now. If there's one game to miss it's probably this one, and the defensive secondary is DUE to DO SOMETHING. Atlanta beating Seattle was fantastic to see and now we don't have a winless desperate 0-3 team to contend with.
Washington -3 @ UCLA - yikes. I’m going to take an L here.

Minnesota -12 vs. Purdue - GTFO O’Connell. There’s only one AOC I ride for.

Penn St. -26.6 vs. Northwestern
Happy Homecoming in Happy Valley! Northwestern just announced plans for a new stadium - only nearly 100 years later! I have often heard of Wildcat’s facility described as a “glorified high school stadium” so you can imagine my surprise when I heard the new digs would have a LOWER capacity, like 12,000 fewer seats. Nothing says, “we acknowledge that no one at our school really cares about football” like lowering the number of seats under the guise of an “improved fan experience.”
Na-na-na-nah na-na-na-nah hey-hey-hey good-bye, Pat Fitzgerald. Fitz, I bet Da Bears would love to have you on their receiver staff. Best wishes!
Bonus Katie Kat Content:
With both running backs questionable, I cannot make this an official pick - but I like the Cardinals here.
Cardinals +1.5 @ Panthers
From 2019:
Murray was asked what he's learned from Mayfield.
"I learned what not to do," he said, laughing.
Re: Cleveland -1.5 @ Falcons
Not a pick - but riddle me this, Batman. The line started at -3. It has since shifted to -1.5 and yet, 65% is on the Browns- spread and confidence (source: Yahoo.) Shouldn’t more people on the Browns mean the line goes the other way? I do not like this, Sam I am. What do I not understand here? (I am sure it is much!)

Closed on a new (to me) house today, Yet here I am, writing an essay…. (cut to martyr scene)
I’m jumping on the Jags / Trevor Lawrence bandwagon. Goodbye Urban Meyer and nonsense coaching although I can’t tell you who the coach is now. They are putting up points and winning games, which last I heard, is what counts. That’s the report for now, and I won’t be shedding tears for an Eagles underperformance.

Raiders -2.5 (essay to come)

Woof, 0-4 in college. Of course I should have just made the Seahawks my POTY because this Lions meltdown was incredibly predictable.
DeleteI'm going with the Raiders because I'm a big believer in the "Alamo" game. Raiders are at home making their last stand because, as bad as 0-3 is, 0-4 is "season's over" territory. They also have lost every game by one score so it's not like they're a crummy squad. Of course Cleveland fans, like us Lions fans, know all about how much you ruin your franchise by hiring Belicheck assistants, but hard to imagine the Raiders being a 12-13 loss team.
Denver blows. Nate Hackett is awful. 43 total points in 3 games? Get out of town. I could actually see them going 5-12. Put me down for a comfortable black and silver W.

Essay: Cardinals +1.5 over Panthers
Did you see DJ Moore's press conference on Thursday? If so, the look of despair in his eyes probably seemed familiar: It's the same look OBJ had last year right before his dad took to YouTube and changed the trajectory of the Browns forever. Their shared source of despair is of course Baker Mayfield, who ranks dead last in QBR among all starting QBs. He did nothing to help the Panthers get an unimpressive win over the Saints last week, and I expect the Cardinals defense to feast on him—just as it did in 2019 and 2021.

ReplyDeleteI'll go with my Wolfpack tonight for an essay for no real reason other than "the Wolfpack" is my son's favorite team in any sport, because he saw the helmet one day a couple years ago and said, "whoa what's that team," and we told him, "the Wolfpack" and well how does a little kid who is first starting to ask about names of football teams not love that? Especially given the sum of the other options. We are about to head out to a campfire cookout at a neighbor's house and I'll have the TV on so that when we walk back into the house the Wolfpack helmets will be on the TV and we'll say "hey Greg look it's the Wolfpack, and we'll get a couple/few "go Wolfpack" moments in before bedtime.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good enough Saturday for me win or lose. Hope everyone is having a great one. I'll also go with my Sun Devils and the points against USC tonight. Back tomorrow with 4 NFL votes.
Tough one for our Wolfpack last night. Glad to pick up a point with the Devils. Bringing in the suicide squad of Commanders (+3.5), Bears (+3.5), Seahawks (+4.5) and Panthers (+1.5) to save the week. What could go wrong?

Pretty simple reasoning here. Lions missing their two best skill players, and have already shown they are I’ll equipped to finish games they should win. This is a bet on the points, no more. Seahawks also stink, but Lions have no business giving away more than a FG
ReplyDeleteJets +3.5
Titans +3.5
Raiders -2.5
Commanders +3.5 - Essay
Feels like the right time to go against the Cowboys on a short week. Definitely a big letdown spot at home after two weeks of wins by Cooper Rush, now followed by press and coaches with quotes like "that's just who he is", "he has an aptitude to play", and "the mental part comes easy for him". He's 3-0 as a starter, so pretty good results for an undrafted guy who was waived in August then brought back. No Cowboys QB has ever gone 4-0 in his first 4 starts. I think he comes back down to Earth and the Commanders keep it close in a defensive battle.
yikes, super busy and just missed my college pick....would have taken NCSt anyway

Essay Cardinals +2.5 over Panthers -- All functional NFL franchises are boringly similar, but each dysfunctional NFL franchise is dysfunctional in its own exciting way (L. Tolstoy). Basically a bet that the dysfunctional Cardinals are dysfunctional in a more productive way than the extremely dysfunctional Panthers. Mayfield has averaged about one splash play per game and otherwise has looked like a shadow of his Browns self. I mean, yeah, they beat the Saints on another multi-INT Jameis day (Baker meanwhile completing fewer than half his passes), but if Murray can set any sort of pace for Carolina to match this could get ugly.
